Wednesday, December 14, 2011

Hello!

Medieval Faire invitations were sent home today.  On Friday, January 13 from 12:30 - 2:30, we will hold our faire in the cafeteria.  The day will include a Medieval Feast (this will be our lunch for the day) and station activities run by the students to teach others about a particular aspect of the Middle Ages.  Parents are encouraged to attend.  I have attached an electronic copy of the invitation in case your child forgets to show you the paper copy.  An e-mail from some of our room parents will be coming shortly for you to sign up to donate items for our Medieval feast and/or volunteer at the faire.  Many, many thanks to Mrs. Parkison, Mrs. Brooks, and Mrs. Mills for organizing much of this for us!

The other attached documents are related to the station activity that groups of students will prepare to teach others about their assigned topics.  Students are completing research now, and are beginning the planning stages of the station activity.  Students will have an opportunity to prepare their station materials in social studies class and in their homeroom classes after winter break.  Students were encouraged to discuss their station activities with parents for ideas and resources that you may have tucked away and they don't know about:)  I will be checking for a parent signature on the planning document after the winter break.

Students (and parents) are encouraged to dress up as a Medieval character, but this is NOT required.  We discussed several options on how to keep this as inexpensive as possible.  Students could make costumes from materials that they have at home, or can borrow costumes, etc.  It is NOT necessary to purchase a new costume for the faire.  With a little creativity, station activity materials and costumes could made inexpensively or free with materials that you have at home.  Below are a few websites with ideas on how to inexpensively create costumes.  Please let me know if you come across any great websites with ways to make inexpensive costumes.

This will be a fun and exciting day!  As always, thank you so much for your support of our projects.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  I hope to see you at the Medieval Faire!  Enjoy your winter break!

Take care,
Stephanie Scarpinato

Science Information

On Thursday or Friday, students will be assigned an Osmosis "Egg"speriment.  This is an at-home project.  Your child should bring home a booklet we made in class to write observations and conclusions.  They also will have a 2-page stapled paper that offers the instructions and has questions that must be answered.

This is a seven day experiment that will count as a test grade!

Mrs. Oddo's and Mrs. Compton's classes are due on December 8.
Mrs. Scarpinato's and Mrs. Malcolm's classes are due on December 9.

Materials:
Jar with a lid (wide mouth)
raw egg (it can be white or brown)
white vinegar
clear corn syrup
string to use with metric measurement
booklet (made in class)

Day one: Measure the egg around the middle (metric only!).  Record on the white paper.  Place the egg in the jar and cover with vinegar.  Cover the jar and place in a cool location, not the refrigerator.  Observe and journal your observation for 3 days. (Day1, day2, day3).  Try to plan on writing observations about the same time each day.

Day three: After your observation, pour off the vinegar, carefully remove the egg and measure.  Note the measurement on the white paper.  Rinse out the jar and place the egg back inside.  Cover the egg with about 18cm of corn syrup.  Answer question 1-3 under "What happened?" on the white paper.  Write a conclusion about the effects of vinegar on an egg. Cover the jar and observe the egg for the next 3 days.  (day 4, day 5, day 6)

Day six: After your observation, carefully pour off the corn syrup.  The egg will be very slick!  Measure the egg and note data on the white paper.  Rinse out the jar and fill with tap water.  Answer question 3 under "What Now".  Carefully place the egg back inside. Answer question 4 under "What Happened?"  Write a conclusion about the effects of corn syrup on the egg.

Day seven: Write your last observation.  Pour off the water and measure one more time.  Answer the remaining questions from the white paper.  Write your conclusion about the effect of water on the egg.

After day seven has concluded students may turn in their completed white pages and the booklet that holds their observations and conclusions.

IF the egg falls and breaks, you have to start all over again!  Be careful and enjoy the process of OSMOSIS!

Grade Six

The sixth-grade standards are a transition from the emphasis placed on whole number arithmetic in the elementary grades to foundations of algebra. The standards emphasize rational numbers. Students will use ratios to compare data sets; recognize decimals, fractions, and percents as ratios; solve single-step and multistep problems, using rational numbers; and gain a foundation in the understanding of integers. Students will solve linear equations and use algebraic terminology. Students will solve problems involving area, perimeter, and surface area, work with
Ï€ (pi), and focus on the relationships among the properties of quadrilaterals. In addition, students will focus on applications of probability and statistics. While learning mathematics, students will be actively engaged, using concrete materials and appropriate technology such as calculators, computers, and spreadsheets. However, facility in the use of technology shall not be regarded as a substitute for a student’s understanding of quantitative concepts and relationships or for proficiency in basic computations. Students will also identify real-life applications of the mathematical principles they are learning and apply these to science and other disciplines they are studying. Mathematics has its own language, and the acquisition of specialized vocabulary and language patterns is crucial to a student’s understanding and appreciation of the subject. Students should be encouraged to use correctly the concepts, skills, symbols, and vocabulary identified in the following set of standards. Problem solving has been integrated throughout the six content strands. The development of problemsolving skills should be a major goal of the mathematics program at every grade level. Instruction in the process of problem solving will need to be integrated early and continuously into each student’s mathematics education. Students must be helped to develop a wide range of skills and strategies for solving a variety of problem types.

SOCIAL STUDIES – European geography quiz and map project due on Wednesday, November 16. Study the notes in the SS notebook and the map project 10 minutes per night rather than waiting until the last minute. Map projects were distributed yesterday. Students will have an entire class period to work on it on early next week, so should NOT complete the map over the weekend. It was suggested to the students that for HW, they should focus on coloring (use light colors only) their map and labeling the 10 capitals and countries that they need to memorize for the quiz. They could also add their latitude and longitude lines, but will need to look at an atlas or map on the Internet to complete this part accurately.
Due to a short week signed papers will not be sent home today.  Please look for them next Thursday. :)

New Home Reading Program "Dig Into A Real Treasure Read"

The new home reading program for the second nine weeks will be explained to students tomorrow.

We are very pleased with student participation in the “Metamorphosis” independent reading program during our first marking period. In an ongoing effort to enhance the depth and breadth of your child’s independent reading, we begin a new program focusing on reading quality, award-winning literature. Students may choose prize-winning works from the Newbery and Newbery Honor Awards, Coretta Scott King Award, American Library Association Best Books for Young Adults, and B.O.B. books. Each week, please complete your book log and a response activity from the “Idea Wall” in the classroom. There are many possibilities from which to choose! Successful completion of both steps, along with finishing a book, will allow students to choose a key from our collection. At the end of the marking period, students will be able to see if their keys unlock the mysterious padlock. The key that unlocks the treasure will provide both an individual prize and all the ingredients for a class treat.

Every Thursday each student will turn in a completed book response and the book log. Thursday, January 19th will be the last day a book response may be turned in.

Book lists will be available in the classroom. Please note that most books are worth one credit. The value of an extremely demanding book may be negotiated on an individual basis, but please do this before beginning to read. A selection of books is available in our classrooms as well as in the library.

Parents: We are seeking contributions to our key collection and donations of cool key chains! Students that complete 6 books will choose a key chain.

In this marking period, this activity will count as a unit test for reading. The following grading scale will be in effect:

5 book credits=A, 4 credits=B, 3 credits=C, etc.

Key chains will be awarded for six or more books!

It is our hope that students will discover some real reading treasures!
