Dear Parents & Guardians,
Your 5th grader has an opportunity to go to Cosby High School on June 11, 2012, to practice for the Fifth Grade Closing Ceremony.  It is very important that all students attend this practice so that they will know where to sit, stand, and walk during the ceremony.  We will need to travel by school bus to Cosby High School that Monday at no cost to the students. We will be leaving school around 8:45 a.m. and will return in time for lunch.  Please sign and return the form below by June 5, indicating that you have received this information.  Please note that a parent/guardian signature is required in order for your child to participate.
Sincerely,
Ms. Gloria Cooper
*****Please detach and return to teacher*****
I am aware that my son/daughter will be traveling by school bus to Cosby High School on June 11, 2012, to practice for the closing ceremony.

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,
June brings a time for new beginnings and celebration for things achieved.  We are busily preparing for our Fifth Grade Closing Ceremony.  The program will be at 9:00 am on June 13, 2012 at Cosby High School.  The fifth grade and resource teachers and administration will be attending the ceremony.  We are asking that parents bring their child promptly at 8:30 am to Cosby High School.  There the child’s homeroom teacher will take attendance and get them lined up for the ceremony.   Parking at Cosby should be adequate for the event, but please remember to give yourself enough time to get in and find a seat prior to the 9:00 am start.  The assembly will begin promptly at 9:00 am.
The Fifth Grade Closing Ceremony is a milestone event.  We are asking the boys to wear long pants and a nice shirt and the girls to wear a dress, skirt and blouse or pants outfit.  Please no high heels as the children will be walking across a stage.
We realize that some students may not be able to ride with their family to the ceremony due to prior engagements.  With this in mind, it is imperative that we get an accurate count of those students who may not be able to ride with their parents/family to the ceremony.  Please fill out the form below and return to the classroom teacher by June 5, 2012.  We will then schedule transportation as needed.
If you choose to take your child after the ceremony, please indicate this on the form below.  This count will help us prepare for the sign out process from Cosby. Currently, we are planning to have the children exit the auditorium and gather with their teacher in the commons.  Your child’s teacher will personally hand to you the child’s real certificate when you come to take them as an efficient way of checking out.
We look forward to seeing you on June 13th at Cosby High School to share this joyful occasion.
Sincerely,
Ms. Cooper and Ms. Bowers
·     Please indicate how your child will both arrive and depart from the ceremony.

Message from Maria Cox

Volunteers desperately needed
Parents--A few short days before our Spring Carnival and we find ourselves in the same position that we have every year before this event…..WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS. This is our last plea before we begin cutting games, rides, food stations, etc. from our lineup OR if we cannot ensure adequate assistance, may have to cancel the event. We MUST have volunteers to successfully run this event. I know we are all busy but let’s all chip in for OUR students and make this happen. In the end, if we don’t have the manpower, it will be all of the students as Winterpock who will lose out. Tell your friends, neighbors, family, clubs you are associated with, girl scouts, boy scouts, sports associations--anyone. We can all give 1 hour of our time. If we cannot secure adequate volunteers, our biggest fundraiser of the year will be at stake and so will the additional funds that we raise to give to our school for our students. We are depending on this money for technology, library books, B.O.B., programs, Reading Counts, classroom funding and SO MUCH MORE for ALL of the students at Winterpock. Let’s make this happen for our children. Sign up online at https://mail.ccpsnet.net/owa/redir.aspx?C=a102a9fb0ce64084aad5024a485d0b11&URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.signupgenius.com%2fgo%2f30E084FAAAB23A13-spring
Thank you for supporting our students.

Please email your photos to Carolyn@4wieders.com by May 4th.

If your already sent me your photos, thank you!!

How much money should I send with my child? Bring a minimum of $20 for lunch, drinks, and snacks to purchase in the park.  You may send more for souvenirs if you'd like. We are not allowed to bring food or drinks from home into the park. The students will be responsible for keeping their own money.
How about snacks on the bus? You may pack non-sticky snacks and a drink (clear water only) for the bus rides.  On the way home, sticky snacks like funnel cakes, ice cream, sodas, etc. are not allowed on the bus.  Each teacher will have a trash bag to properly dispose of all trash.
What if my child needs medication during the day?  Children who take medication will need to remain with their own parent or teacher during the trip so medication can be administered.
What should my child wear? Dress for the weather.  We suggest pants or shorts with secure pockets to hold money.  Comfortable walking shoes are a must!! No flip flops that will fly off on a ride and no bathing suits. If it looks like rain, it's a good idea to bring a plastic poncho.  It is recommended that students and chaperones apply sunscreen in the morning before coming to school.  A hat and sunglasses can be worn if you would like.
May my child bring an IPod, electronic games, or a cell phone? Students are not to bring cell phones to school.  Other electronics may be used on the bus, but at your own risk.  We are not responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged items.
I'm not a chaperone, but may I come anyway? You may meet us at the park, but you will not be considered an official chaperone. This means that your child must stay with his/her chaperone that has been assigned. Also, you'll need to buy your ticket at the gate at the full admission price.    If you drive separately, please do NOT drive your car between the buses since they try to travel together through traffic lights and tolls.  It is recommended that you drive ahead of us and meet us there.  Please also be aware that you should not follow the buses into the park as they go to a special bus entrance where cars are not allowed.  They will exit off of I-64 one exit before the regular car entrance to enter the park through a special buses only entrance.
Is my child allowed to ride home with me from Busch Gardens? Yes, as long as you sign them out with their teacher.  If your child is going home with someone besides their parent(s), please notify your child’s homeroom teacher no later than Thursday, April 19, 2012.  All students need to be signed out with his/her homeroom teacher before going home that day.
Do the students have something that they need to do while at the park? At the park, they will need to take specific photographs or draw pictures as mentioned on their project sheet that they received in school. All students will be completing their own picture journal for a grade after the trip that ties in nicely with various areas of our curriculum. Other than the mandatory project pictures, the children can include other fun pictures, too! So, it would be a great idea to send a disposable camera.  Students may also draw pictures if they prefer.  Chaperones may bring cameras to assist with this task.

Sunday, March 11, 2012

Dear Parents,
In social studies, we are wrapping up our study of World War I and moving onto World War II.  I would love to schedule some guest speakers to offer a variety of knowledge and perspectives on this important period in our history.  If you or someone you know who lives in the area would be willing to talk to our students, we would love to have you visit with us!  I am looking for:
·         WWII veterans
·         Holocaust survivors
·         A senior citizen who lived during this time period and can describe how WWII affected life on the “home front” (especially USA or Europe)
·         A WWI or WWII enthusiast
·         Someone who has WWI or WWII memorabilia (pictures, uniforms, ration coupons, newspapers, etc.) from someone who lived during this time period
Since our audience is fifth graders, I know that concerns may arise about appropriate content.  I will be happy to talk to all guest speakers about this before a visit is scheduled.
In addition, I often talk to my classes about how history is taught in our schools from an American perspective.  If anyone has European text books or other resources from different countries which discuss WWI or WWII from a non-American point of view, I would LOVE to borrow it!
Presentations should be approximately 30 – 45 minutes in length.  Please let me know if you need to borrow a computer and projector.  I teach four social studies classes, so please let me know if you are willing to share information with more than one class.  Please respond by Monday, March 19 so I can create a schedule for presentations.  As always, thank you for your support!
Take care,
Stephanie Scarpinato
